Mohács to Mohács

Exhibition

In 2026, we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács (29 August 1526), in which the forces of King Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia clashed with the army of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I.

Among those who fought and lost their lives in the battle was George Zápolya, the then owner of the Bojnice estate, a Hungarian nobleman and the younger brother of the Transylvanian Voivode and later King of Hungary, John I Zápolya.

The Slovak National Museum – Bojnice Museum has chosen to commemorate this pivotal event in the history of present-day Slovakia and Central Europe, together with the historical developments that followed, through the exhibition “Mohács to Mohács: From Loss to Triumph”

The exhibition is primarily educational and aims to present history in an accessible and engaging way. Through a selection of collection objects from the holdings of the Slovak National Museum – Bojnice Museum, it highlights this crucial period as well as selected events and personalities of the 16th and 17th centuries in the Kingdom of Hungary, which permanently shaped the historical and cultural development of the Upper Nitra region, the territory of present-day Slovakia, and the wider Central European cultural landscape.

The exhibition is presented through a carefully curated selection of museum objects and historical photographs, which together create a coherent narrative illustrating the key events and developments of the period.
