The exhibition offers a view of the social changes of the 19th century through portraits that capture the historical and technological developments.

July - November 2024

About the event

Step into the fascinating world of the 19th century, a period of great social changes in Europe and across the globe. The exhibition at the Slovak National Museum – Bojnice Castle Museum presents works that illustrate this era through portraits.

In the first half of the 19th century, portraits emerged as significant artworks aiming to capture and immortalize the social status of their subjects. The portrayed included members of the imperial court, aristocracy, military-political elites, bourgeoisie, industrialists, and later, figures of the Slovak national revival.

The final decades of the 19th century brought new imaging technologies, such as daguerreotype and photography. These innovations significantly influenced portrait production, offering new possibilities and methods for depicting individuals.

The exhibition is located in the exhibition hall of the West Wing of Bojnice Castle. Visitors can view it as part of the castle tour or independently.

The exhibition is open during the museum’s opening hours and will run until the end of November 2024.

Come and be captivated by history through portraits that offer a unique insight into the social and historical contexts of the 19th century.
